This June, two German healthcare technological companies presented a novel tool in dentistry - the so-called dental-dedicated magnetic resonance imaging (ddMRI). Dentsply Sirona and Siemens Healthineers released Magnetom Free.Max Dental edition - a modernization of their flagman MRI product. In fact, it is a similar MRI technology but with an additional "dental helmet" - special bonds for the patient's head, helping to make the precisest jaw scan.
Technical Advantages
Magnetom - is a radiation-free solution with more precise capabilities than traditional dental X-ray. As the authors claim, ddMRI makes the invisible visible: the scanner visualizes soft tissues with high contrast, allowing us to learn the smallest features of patients' mouth structure and detect the inflammatory process at the earliest stages, making it possible to prevent the full-scale development of the disease.
The whole scanning process took about 20 minutes, and these results may be used by the whole specter of dental specialists for periodontosis detection and treatment, tooth extraction, orthodontal practices, etc. Obviously, the main advantage of such an approach is safety: X-ray radiation is not very dangerous, but the ddMRI allows us to completely avoid its harmful effects.
