Treatment presentation software is one of Remedico's specializations, so we want to share a fascinating novelty from this industry. Demonstrating the procedures and operation elements before conducting may significantly decrease patient's stress, which is especially important when people have dental anxiety.

Recently, a collaborative research group from Belgium, Thailand, and Sweden published a study describing a novel system that can create a virtual 3D model of a certain patient through dental scans.

The invention still needs to be tuned for medical applications. However, the prototype already looks exciting – let's take a look.

How does it work?

The scientific group used three approaches to create a virtual patient model: AI-drive, AI-refined, and semi-automatic registration (SAR). They all used the same sources dataset, including facial, intraoral, and low-dose computed tomography scans.

Scientists divided the virtual patient scull into three equal parts to examine the system's accuracy. The upper and middle thirds were the "easiest part" – AI-powered approaches showed 85% accuracy, while SAR demonstrated 100% accuracy. The lower third was much more difficult; scientists observed 30% and 35%, respectively.

Additionally, AI-drive and AI-refined were less time-consuming and provided a virtual patient in 26.5 and 40,8 seconds. SAR's virtual model required 385 seconds.

Feedback

The research group provided technology samples to 35 dentists and 25 laypersons to survey their satisfaction after implementing the described virtual patient system. Expectedly, both parties expressed the highest level of satisfaction with using treatment presentation software with this technology compared to alternatives, including 2D visualization and 3D images of separated patients' parts.

At this stage, visual modeling technology looks quite promising and may become a helpful addition to VR-equipped presentation software used for patient education, such as Dentaverse from Virtual Patient: Futuristic Element of Dental Education Remedico.
